epidat - epigraphical database | digital textarchives

Epidat - The Database of Jewish epigraphy - provides the inventory, documentation, editing and presentation of epigraphic collections. Currently online are available 120 digital editions with 22795 epitaphs.

Access options

There are several options for the screening of the files:

location-based - places, regions

• local - single file (in alphabetical order)
• regional - several files
• nationwide - all files

time-based | chronological

• 1050-1519 Middle Ages
• 1520-1789 early Modern Age
• 1789-1945 Modern Age
• 1945-1960 post war
• also you can define and extract from all files your own period of study based on the dated inscriptions

index-based

• indices show all files organised by subject and factual criteria

full-text-search

• full-text-search in edition and translation

Map

• Corpora can be chosen via a scalable map. We are happy to receive any indications of missing or poorly listed content

Structure of the digital editions

  The digital edition is usually preceded by an introduction that gives background information on names of the editors, on edition conventions, on sponsors, as well as on more publications

Currently, two data formats for independent processing of the data are available:

• EpiDoc XML | TEI -is an international program-independent TEI-compliant markup language for epigraphic data..
• plain/text - can be further processed with popular word processing programs.
